About

Saint Dominic Savio was an Italian student of St. John Bosco and is the youngest non-martyr to be canonized by the Catholic Church. Born in 1842 in Riva, Italy, Dominic was known for his deep piety, purity, and devotion to prayer from a young age. At just twelve years old, he entered the Oratory of St. John Bosco in Turin, where he grew spiritually under Don Bosco’s guidance. He formed the “Company of the Immaculate Conception” with his friends, dedicating themselves to acts of charity and devotion to Mary. Dominic died at age fourteen from illness, leaving behind a reputation for holiness. Pilgrims today visit his tomb at the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in Turin, a place closely tied to the Salesian mission.

Legacy

Saint Dominic Savio is remembered as a model for young people, showing that sanctity can be achieved in everyday life. His motto, “Death rather than sin,” reflected his commitment to purity and virtue. Canonized in 1954 by Pope Pius XII, he is the patron saint of choirboys, the falsely accused, and youth. His life continues to inspire Catholic children and teenagers to live faithfully, love God deeply, and strive for holiness no matter their age.
“If I do not become a saint, I am doing nothing.” — Saint Dominic Savio
