About

Saint Lawrence was a deacon of the Church of Rome in the 3rd century and is one of the most venerated martyrs of the early Church. Born in Spain, he served under Pope Sixtus II and was entrusted with the care of the Church’s treasures and the distribution of alms to the poor. During the persecution of Christians under Emperor Valerian in 258 AD, Pope Sixtus was martyred, and Lawrence was soon arrested as well. When commanded to hand over the Church’s wealth, Lawrence instead presented the poor and sick, declaring them as the Church’s true treasures. His courageous act of faith and service led to his martyrdom by being roasted alive on a gridiron, an event that left a lasting mark on Christian history.

Legacy

Saint Lawrence is remembered for his extraordinary courage, humor in the face of death, and his unwavering devotion to Christ and the poor. His martyrdom inspired countless Christians to hold fast to their faith during times of persecution. He is honored as the patron saint of deacons, cooks, and the poor. The Basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura in Rome, built over his burial site, remains a major pilgrimage destination. His feast is celebrated with great reverence, especially in Rome where his witness is tied to the deep history of the Church.
“The poor are the treasures of the Church.” – Saint Lawrence, in response to Roman officials demanding the Church’s wealth.
