About

Blessed Miguel Pro (1891–1927) was a Mexican Jesuit priest known for his courage, joy, and deep devotion during a time of intense persecution of the Catholic Church in Mexico. Born in Guadalupe, Zacatecas, Miguel entered the Society of Jesus at 20. Anti-Catholic laws forced him to study abroad, and he was ordained in Belgium in 1925. Upon returning to Mexico, he ministered in secret—celebrating Mass, hearing confessions, and bringing the sacraments to the faithful despite the risk of arrest. Always cheerful and resourceful, he often disguised himself to move freely and avoid detection. Arrested on false charges of plotting against the government, he faced execution with arms outstretched in the form of a cross, proclaiming, “¡Viva Cristo Rey!” (“Long live Christ the King!”).

Legacy

Blessed Miguel Pro’s life is a testament to fearless faith and pastoral dedication. His martyrdom became a rallying cry for persecuted Catholics in Mexico and a source of inspiration worldwide. Photographs of his execution spread quickly, becoming an enduring witness to Christ’s triumph over fear and oppression. Today, he is honored as a patron of youth, Catholic action, and those facing religious persecution. Pilgrims can venerate his relics at the Church of the Holy Family in Mexico City.
