About

Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati (1901–1925) was an Italian layman who lived with great joy and fervor in the early 20th century. Known for his contagious enthusiasm, love of the outdoors, and devotion to the poor, Pier Giorgio lived his short life as a model of youthful holiness. Born into a prominent family in Turin, he grew up amid privilege, yet he chose a life of service and sacrifice. He joined the Dominican Third Order, dedicated himself to the Eucharist, and poured his energy into helping the needy. An avid mountain climber, he often used outdoor adventures as a way to draw friends deeper into faith, calling them to higher ideals both spiritually and physically. Despite suffering from polio, which he contracted while serving the poor, he faced his illness with courage and serenity. He died at only 24 years old, but his radiant witness has continued to inspire generations, especially young Catholics seeking holiness in the ordinary world.

Legacy

Pier Giorgio’s legacy is one of youthful sanctity. He showed that holiness is not confined to monasteries or pulpits, but can be lived out in school, in friendships, on mountain trails, and in acts of charity. St. John Paul II, who beatified him in 1990, called him “the man of the eight beatitudes,” highlighting how his life embodied the Sermon on the Mount. Today, Saint Pier Giorgio is a patron for young people, students, and mountaineers. His example has encouraged Catholic youth movements across the world, and his devotion to prayer and service continues to shape pastoral outreach to young adults. His tomb in Turin remains a pilgrimage site, and his motto, “Verso l’alto” (“To the heights”), still calls Catholics to climb higher toward God.
“The faith given to me in baptism suggests to me surely: of yourself you will do nothing, but if you take God as your center, then you will reach the goal.” — Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati
