About
Saint Thomas More was an English lawyer, scholar, and statesman who lived during the 16th century. He served as Lord Chancellor under King Henry VIII. A faithful Catholic, he refused to approve the king’s divorce or recognize him as the head of the Church of England. Because of this, Thomas More was arrested, tried, and eventually executed for treason. He remained faithful to his conscience and to the Catholic Church until the very end.
Legacy
Saint Thomas More is remembered as a brave man who stood up for truth, even when it cost him everything. He is a role model for people in government, law, and anyone who faces pressure to go against their beliefs. In 1935, Pope Pius XI canonized him as a saint. Pope John Paul II later named him the patron of statesmen and politicians. His example still inspires Catholics to stand firm in their faith, even in the face of injustice.
“I die the King’s good servant, but God’s first.” — Saint Thomas More
