About

Solanus Casey was an American Capuchin friar known for his deep humility, strong faith, and powerful intercessory prayer. He was born Bernard Francis Casey in 1870 in Oak Grove, Wisconsin, to Irish immigrant parents. After feeling called to the priesthood, he faced academic challenges due to language barriers and was eventually accepted into the Capuchin order in Detroit, where he took the name Solanus. Although he was ordained as a “simplex priest”—meaning he could celebrate Mass but not preach or hear confessions—Solanus Casey became known for his warm heart, spiritual wisdom, and tireless service. Assigned mostly as a porter (doorkeeper) at St. Bonaventure Monastery in Detroit, he greeted visitors with kindness and offered encouragement, prayer, and spiritual direction. Many people began to report healings and answered prayers through his intercession even during his lifetime.

Legacy

The legacy of Solanus Casey continues to grow, especially in the United States. Though he lived a hidden and humble life, his deep trust in God and gentle love for people left a powerful impact. Known for his catchphrase “Thank God ahead of time,” he taught others to be grateful even before their prayers were answered. Solanus kept detailed notes of the people he prayed for, and many testimonies of healing and conversion were recorded. After his death in 1957, devotion to him increased. In 2017, Pope Francis declared him “Blessed” after a miraculous healing was confirmed through his intercession. Today, thousands visit his tomb at the Solanus Casey Center in Detroit to ask for his prayers and to learn from his simple but profound example of holiness.
