About

St. Rose of Lima (1586–1617) was the first canonized saint of the Americas and is remembered for her life of prayer, penance, and love for the poor. Born Isabel Flores de Oliva in Lima, Peru, she was nicknamed “Rose” for her beauty. From a young age she devoted herself to Christ, practicing extreme simplicity and a life of sacrifice. Though her parents hoped she would marry, Rose chose to consecrate her virginity to God and became a Dominican tertiary. She built a small hermitage in her family’s garden where she spent her days in prayer and caring for the poor of Lima.

Legacy

St. Rose of Lima’s holiness and sacrifices inspired many to embrace deeper devotion to Christ. She became a symbol of purity, humility, and charity, and her canonization in 1671 made her the first saint of the New World. Today, she remains a powerful intercessor for those seeking strength in trials and a reminder that holiness can flourish anywhere. The Basilica and Convent of St. Dominic in Lima, where she is buried, is an important pilgrimage site for the faithful.
“Apart from the cross, there is no other ladder by which we may get to heaven.” — St. Rose of Lima
