About

Saint Stephen the martyr was one of the very first followers of Jesus to give his life for the faith. He lived in the 1st century and was chosen by the apostles to be one of the first seven deacons in the early Church. These deacons helped take care of the poor and served the community so that the apostles could focus on preaching and prayer. Stephen was full of faith, wisdom, and the Holy Spirit. He spoke with boldness about Jesus and performed signs and miracles that amazed many. Because of his powerful preaching, some religious leaders grew angry and falsely accused him of blasphemy. Stephen was brought before the Sanhedrin (Jewish council) and gave a long speech explaining how Jesus was the fulfillment of God’s promises. Enraged, they dragged him outside the city and stoned him to death, making him the first Christian martyr—a title that means “witness.”

Legacy

Saint Stephen the martyr is remembered as the Protomartyr, the first to die for faith in Jesus Christ. His example shows how to stand firm in truth and forgive others, even in suffering. As he was dying, he asked God to forgive those who were killing him. His death deeply affected those who witnessed it, including Saul, who later became Saint Paul, one of the Church’s greatest missionaries. The Church honors Stephen’s courage, service, and holiness, especially right after Christmas, reminding us that following Jesus sometimes requires great sacrifice.
“Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” — Saint Stephen the martyr
