About

Saint Scholastica (c. 480–543) was the twin sister of St. Benedict of Nursia and is honored as the spiritual mother of Benedictine women. From an early age, she consecrated her life to God, embracing prayer, humility, and community life according to the spirit that would shape the Benedictine tradition. Though she lived separately from her brother, their bond was deeply rooted in shared faith and mutual spiritual counsel. A well-known account from St. Gregory the Great recounts how Scholastica’s prayer once brought a sudden storm, symbolizing the primacy of love and prayer over strict observance. Her life reflects a gentle yet profound holiness grounded in trust in God.

Legacy

Saint Scholastica’s legacy endures through the Benedictine monasteries for women that continue her charism of prayer, balance, and hospitality. She is remembered for teaching that love fulfills the law and that sincere prayer moves the heart of God. Her witness complements St. Benedict’s Rule by highlighting compassion, communion, and attentiveness to God’s will. Across centuries, she has inspired women religious and lay faithful alike to seek God with a peaceful and persevering heart. Today, her memory is closely associated with places like Subiaco and Monte Cassino, where the Benedictine way of life took root and continues to flourish.
“She could do more because she loved more.” — St. Gregory the Great, Dialogues (Book II)
