The Prayer

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

About This Prayer

The Gloria is one of the most ancient and beloved prayers to God in Catholic tradition. Often called the “Angelic Hymn,” it originates from the song of the angels at Christ’s birth in Luke 2:14: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Over the centuries, the Church expanded this verse into a hymn of praise to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Today, it is recited or sung during the Mass on Sundays, solemnities, and feasts, except during Advent and Lent. The Gloria directs our hearts to God in thanksgiving, worship, and adoration, acknowledging His greatness and mercy.

When To Pray

The Gloria is primarily a liturgical prayer to God prayed during Mass, but Catholics can also use it in personal devotion. It is especially fitting in times of joy and thanksgiving, such as Easter, Christmas, or moments of gratitude for God’s blessings.
