The Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, You fasted for forty days in the desert and overcame every temptation of the enemy. I come to You now in my weakness. You know the struggles I carry, the habits that pull at me, and the thoughts that disturb my peace. Give me strength when I am tired, clarity when I am confused, and courage when I feel alone. Help me to choose what is good, true, and holy. Guard my mind, protect my heart, and lead me away from whatever separates me from You. When temptation feels strong, remind me that Your grace is stronger. Let Your Word be my defense, Your Cross my refuge, and Your Spirit my guide. Amen.

About This Prayer

This Prayer for Temptation draws inspiration from Christ’s forty days in the desert (Matthew 4:1–11), where He faced and defeated Satan through prayer, fasting, and Sacred Scripture. The Church teaches that temptation itself is not sin; rather, it is an opportunity to grow in virtue and rely more fully on God’s grace (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2846–2849). This prayer asks not only for strength to resist sin, but for deeper trust in Christ, who understands human weakness because He willingly entered into it.

When To Pray

This prayer may be prayed whenever temptation feels immediate or persistent, especially during moments of spiritual dryness, stress, or discouragement. It is particularly fitting during Lent, before Confession, or when striving to overcome habitual sin. Many Catholics also pray it before sleep or at the start of the day, asking God to guard their thoughts and actions.
