About This Prayer

The Prayer for All the Faithful Departed is a traditional Catholic prayer offered for those who have died in Christ. It expresses hope in the Resurrection and trust in God’s mercy for souls who may still be undergoing purification. Rooted in Scripture and Tradition, this prayer reflects the Church’s belief in the communion of saints, that the living can assist the dead through prayer. It is one of the most common and powerful prayers Catholics offer for the dead, especially during November and at funerals.

When To Pray

This prayer is especially prayed for deceased loved ones, friends, and forgotten souls, particularly on All Souls’ Day (November 2) and throughout the month of November. Catholics often pray it after Mass, during cemetery visits, at funerals, or as part of daily personal prayer. It is also fitting to pray this prayer when remembering anniversaries of death or when reflecting on eternal life.
