About This Prayer
The Ave Maria, or Hail Mary, is one of the most beloved prayers of the Catholic Church. Its opening words draw directly from the angel Gabriel’s greeting to Mary at the Annunciation and Elizabeth’s greeting at the Visitation. The prayer honors the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Mother of God and asks for her intercession both now and at the hour of our death.

Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus.
Sancta Maria, Mater Dei,
