About This Prayer
The Prayer of Trust by Thomas Merton speaks directly to those who feel uncertain, overwhelmed, or burdened, especially in times of financial stress or need. Written at the Abbey of Abbey of Gethsemani, this prayer reminds us that even when we cannot see how our needs will be met, God is still guiding us.
For someone seeking a financial miracle, this prayer shifts the focus from anxiety about outcomes to trust in God’s providence. It acknowledges the fear of not knowing how things will work out, how bills will be paid, how stability will return, while affirming that the desire to follow God’s will is itself a sign of grace. Merton teaches that trust is not about having the plan, but about believing that God already does.
The Prayer
Prayer of Trust by Thomas Merton:
My Lord God,
I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
nor do I really know myself,
and the fact that I think I am following your will
does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you
does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road,
though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore will I trust you always though
I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.

This prayer is especially powerful when you are facing financial uncertainty, such as struggling with debt, job instability, unexpected expenses, or providing for your family. It can be prayed in the morning as you entrust your financial worries to God, or in the evening when anxiety begins to rise about what tomorrow may bring. It is also meaningful during moments of discouragement, when you feel like your efforts are not enough, and you need to surrender control and trust that God will provide in His time and in His way.
