The Prayer to St. Joseph After the Rosary, traditionally known by its Latin title Ad te, beate Ioseph (“To you, O blessed Joseph”), is a prayer seeking the powerful intercession and protection of St. Joseph. It calls upon him not only as the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and foster father of Jesus, but also as a guardian of the Church and of all who turn to him in times of difficulty. The prayer was composed during the pontificate of Pope Leo XIII and was associated with his encouragement of devotion to St. Joseph. In 1889, Leo XIII issued the encyclical Quamquam Pluries, reflecting on St. Joseph’s special role as patron and protector of the Church. The faithful were directed to add this prayer to the Rosary during the month of October. Its language draws particularly upon St. Joseph’s role in protecting Jesus and Mary. Just as Joseph guarded the Holy Family from danger, the prayer asks him to continue that fatherly mission by protecting the Church and individual Christians from temptation, error, adversity, and the “power of darkness.” The prayer therefore fits naturally after the Rosary. Having sought the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the faithful also turn to her spouse and ask St. Joseph to accompany them in their struggles, help them live faithfully, and ultimately lead holy lives directed toward eternal life with God.
