Prayer for Those Who Persecute You

The Prayer

Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi:  Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

About This Prayer

Christ warned His disciples that following Him could bring rejection and persecution, yet He also promised the Kingdom of Heaven to those who remained faithful. This prayer remembers Christians and all those who suffer persecution while asking especially for courage, protection, perseverance, and peace. St. Francis of Assisi is invoked because his life demonstrated a radical commitment to peace, reconciliation, humility, and love of neighbor. His example reminds Christians to oppose hatred without becoming consumed by hatred themselves.
