About This Prayer

This Prayer for Those We Love by Saint Ambrose of Milan expresses a deep Christian hope rooted in eternal life and communion with others in heaven. Saint Ambrose of Milan, one of the great early Church Fathers, reminds us that love does not end at death but is fulfilled in God. The prayer reflects the Catholic belief in the communion of saints and the longing for reunion with those we cherish. It is especially meaningful for those grieving the loss of loved ones or praying for the souls of the faithful departed. The prayer also echoes the promise of Christ in The Gospel of John 14:3, where Jesus assures His followers that He will prepare a place for them so that they may be with Him forever. It encourages trust in God’s mercy and the hope that earthly separation will give way to eternal joy.

The Prayer

Prayer for Those We Love (Saint Ambrose of Milan): Lord God, we can hope for others nothing better than the happiness we desire for ourselves. Therefore, I pray you, do not separate me after death from those I tenderly loved on earth. Grant than where I am they may be with me, and that I may enjoy their presence in heaven after being so often deprived of it on earth. Lord God, I ask you to receive your beloved children immediately into your life-giving heart. After this brief life on earth, give them eternal happiness. Amen.
