About

Saint Ambrose was a bishop, theologian, and one of the most important Church Fathers of the early Church. Born in the 4th century in what is now Germany, Ambrose was a successful lawyer and governor before becoming bishop of Milan—even though he wasn’t yet baptized at the time! Known for his wisdom, courage, and faith, he stood up to emperors and defended the Church’s teachings. Ambrose was also a gifted preacher and writer. He helped convert Saint Augustine of Hippo by showing him the beauty and truth of the Catholic faith. He introduced hymns into the liturgy and wrote many powerful works about the Trinity and the role of the Church.

Legacy

Saint Ambrose is remembered as one of the original Doctors of the Church. His teachings influenced theology, especially on the sacraments, the role of the Church, and the power of the Holy Spirit. His courage and wisdom shaped the Catholic Church during a time of great transition, and his words still echo in Catholic liturgy and doctrine.
“No one heals himself by wounding another.” — Saint Ambrose
