About

Saint Catherine of Alexandria was a young Christian noblewoman who lived in Egypt during the early 4th century. Known for her intelligence and beauty, she boldly defended her faith when Emperor Maxentius began persecuting Christians. Tradition says she confronted the emperor and engaged in debates with pagan philosophers, converting many by her wisdom. Refusing to abandon her faith, she was imprisoned and eventually condemned to death. When the execution device — a spiked breaking wheel — shattered at her touch, she was finally beheaded, sealing her witness as a martyr for Christ.

Legacy

Catherine became one of the most popular saints of the Middle Ages and is honored as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. She is remembered as a model of courage, purity, and intellectual devotion to God. Many scholars, philosophers, and young women have sought her intercession through the centuries. A monastery on Mount Sinai, one of the oldest in the world, is dedicated to her and houses relics believed to be hers. Her image often shows her with the broken wheel, symbolizing her miraculous protection and steadfast faith.
“I am the bride of Christ. He has taken me as His own.” — Saint Catherine
