About

Saint Elizabeth, remembered as John the Baptist’s Mother, was a devout Jewish woman from the priestly line of Aaron. She was married to Saint Zechariah, a temple priest in Jerusalem. For many years, the couple remained childless until the angel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah, announcing that Elizabeth would miraculously conceive a son despite her old age. This son, John the Baptist, would prepare the way for the Messiah. Elizabeth is also known for her deep faith and joy in welcoming the Blessed Virgin Mary during the Visitation, when she proclaimed, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb” (Luke 1:42).

Legacy

Saint Elizabeth’s life is a testament to God’s faithfulness and timing. Her miraculous motherhood inspires hope for those who feel forgotten or delayed in their prayers. Her greeting to Mary forms part of the beloved Hail Mary prayer, prayed daily by millions of Catholics. Honored in both Eastern and Western Christianity, she is celebrated for her role in salvation history and her example of humble trust in God’s plan.
“Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” — Saint Elizabeth, Luke 1:45
