Closing Prayer After Bible Study

The Prayer

Heavenly Father, We thank you for the gift of your Word and for the time we have spent together listening, learning, and growing in faith. May the Scriptures we have studied remain in our hearts. Through the Holy Spirit, give us wisdom to understand your truth, courage to live according to it, and love to share it with others. Help us not only to hear your Word, but to put it into practice in our families, our work, and our daily lives. When we face uncertainty, remind us of your promises. When we are discouraged, strengthen our trust in you. As we leave this Bible study, remain with us, Lord. Guide our thoughts, words, and actions, and draw us ever closer to your Son. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

About This Prayer

A closing prayer after Bible study gives us an opportunity to thank God for the gift of Sacred Scripture and to ask for the grace to carry what we have learned into our daily lives. Catholics approach Scripture not simply as a text to be studied, but as the inspired Word of God through which the Lord continues to teach and form his people. Bible study therefore should lead beyond gaining knowledge. God’s Word calls us toward prayer, conversion, charity, and a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. This prayer especially asks for the assistance of the Holy Spirit, who helps us understand God’s Word and gives us the wisdom and courage necessary to live according to it. It also reflects the teaching of the Letter of James that Christians are called to become “doers of the word,” allowing Scripture to shape how we treat others and how we respond to the circumstances of everyday life. Closing a Bible study with prayer reminds the group that the study does not really end when everyone leaves. The greater purpose is to carry God’s Word with us and live it.
