About

Saint Martin de Porres (1579–1639) was born in Lima, Peru, the son of a Spanish nobleman and a freed African slave. Because of his mixed-race heritage, he faced prejudice and exclusion throughout his life. Raised in poverty, he became a lay helper at the Dominican convent in Lima, performing humble tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and caring for the sick. Despite these simple duties, Martin was deeply devoted to God, lived a life of penance, and became known for his extraordinary charity and healing gifts. He ministered to the poor and sick of Lima, regardless of their race or background, and many miracles of healing were attributed to him during his lifetime.

Legacy

Canonized in 1962 by Pope John XXIII, Saint Martin de Porres is celebrated as the first Black saint of the Americas. He is remembered as a model of humility, compassion, and justice, especially in caring for those who were marginalized and forgotten by society. His shrine in Lima, Peru, continues to be a pilgrimage site for the faithful. His life is a powerful witness to unity in diversity and the universality of God’s love.
“Compassion, my dear brother, is preferable to cleanliness. Reflect that with a little soap I can easily clean my bed covers, but even with a torrent of tears I would never wash from my soul the stain that my harshness toward the unfortunate would create.” — Saint Martin de Porres
