About

Saint Perpetua was a noblewoman and early Christian martyr who lived in Carthage (modern-day Tunisia) during the early 3rd century. She was only 22 years old, a young mother with an infant son, when she was arrested in 203 AD during the persecution of Christians under the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus. Alongside her enslaved companion, Saint Felicity, and a group of fellow catechumens, Perpetua was imprisoned for refusing to renounce her faith in Jesus Christ. While in prison, Perpetua kept a personal diary — a rare and powerful document now known as The Passion of Saints Perpetua and Felicity. Her writings reveal her spiritual strength, her deep love for Christ, and her unshakable conviction that heaven was worth any earthly suffering. She had visions of ascending a ladder to paradise and defeating evil, which strengthened her resolve. Perpetua and Felicity were ultimately led into the arena and executed before a crowd, dying together as Christian witnesses to the faith.

Legacy

Saint Perpetua is one of the most well-documented and venerated female martyrs in Church history. Her courage, intellect, and love for Christ continue to inspire Christians worldwide. The text of her Passion is considered one of the earliest accounts of Christian martyrdom, and one of the few surviving writings by a woman from the early Church. She stands as a powerful example of courage in the face of persecution, the dignity of motherhood, and the boldness of the early martyrs. Her memory is especially honored alongside Saint Felicity, and together they represent the strength of women in the history of the Church.
