About

Saint Dominic, founder of the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans), was born around 1170 in Caleruega, Spain. From his youth, Dominic showed a deep love for study and prayer. While traveling through southern France as a priest, he encountered many who had fallen into heresy, and his heart was moved to convert them through truth, example, and humility. Instead of fighting falsehood with violence, Dominic chose to combat it with preaching, prayer, and poverty. He and his companions lived simply, teaching the Gospel and defending the faith through clarity and compassion. Dominic is also closely associated with the Holy Rosary — tradition holds that the Blessed Virgin Mary entrusted it to him as a weapon for spiritual battle and the conversion of souls. Dominic’s joy was contagious, his discipline was firm, and his preaching kindled renewal within the Church. His order — the Dominicans — became one of the great pillars of Catholic education and evangelization.

Legacy

Saint Dominic’s legacy endures through the Dominican Order’s centuries-long commitment to truth (Veritas), study, and preaching. His spiritual sons and daughters include theologians, mystics, and saints such as St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Catherine of Siena. Dominic’s emphasis on prayer, contemplation, and proclaiming the Word of God continues to inspire modern Catholics to combine deep learning with deep holiness. He reminds us that the Gospel is not just to be believed, but to be shared boldly and lovingly.
“Arm yourself with prayer rather than a sword; be clothed with humility rather than fine clothes.” — Saint Dominic
