Hail Holy Queen Prayer

“Mary is that bright star which was foretold by Balaam, which rises out of Jacob; whose brightness enlightens the whole world, whose splendor shines in Heaven, and penetrates into hell itself.” — St. Bernard of Clairvaux

The Prayer

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.

About This Prayer

The Hail Holy Queen (Latin: Salve Regina) is one of the most beloved Marian prayers in the Catholic tradition. Traditionally recited at the conclusion of the Rosary, it honors the Blessed Virgin Mary as Mother of Mercy and intercessor for God’s children. Believed to date back to the 11th century, it has been attributed to Blessed Hermann of Reichenau, a Benedictine monk. The prayer reflects themes of hope, consolation, and trust in Mary’s maternal care, especially during life’s trials, and has been incorporated into the Church’s liturgy, particularly in the Liturgy of the Hours.

When To Pray

The Hail Holy Queen is often prayed at the end of the Rosary, but it can also be used at any time as a personal devotion to seek Mary’s intercession. Many Catholics pray it during moments of difficulty, sorrow, or when asking for protection and guidance. In communal settings, it is frequently recited during Marian feasts and processions.
