Ave Maria Prayer Latin
Public Domain: Saint Mary (the Blessed Virgin) with the Christ Child, Saint John the Baptist and Saint Elisabeth. Mezzotint by V. Green, 1774, after Josiah Boydell after T. Willeboirts via Wellcome Collection.
About This Prayer
The Ave Maria, or Hail Mary, is one of the most beloved prayers of the Catholic Church. Its opening words draw directly from the angel Gabriel’s greeting to Mary at the Annunciation and Elizabeth’s greeting at the Visitation. The prayer honors the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Mother of God and asks for her intercession both now and at the hour of our death.
The Prayer
Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus.
Sancta Maria, Mater Dei,
ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.
