About This Prayer

The Prayer for Spiritual Communion is a beloved Catholic prayer traditionally prayed when a person cannot physically receive the Eucharist at Mass. The prayer expresses a deep desire to receive Jesus Christ spiritually when sacramental Communion is not possible. Catholics have prayed this prayer for centuries during times of illness, travel, persecution, or when watching Mass remotely. The prayer reminds believers that Christ’s grace is not limited by physical distance. When prayed with faith and longing, it invites Jesus spiritually into the heart and renews the soul’s union with Him. The prayer became widely known through the writings and spiritual teachings of St. Alphonsus Liguori, who strongly encouraged frequent acts of spiritual communion as a way to deepen love for the Eucharist. Many Catholics pray this prayer during Eucharistic adoration, when attending Mass online, or when they must remain in the pew during Communion. It serves as a reminder that Christ desires to dwell in the hearts of all who seek Him sincerely.

The Prayer

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
